ARC Festival


Created for ARC Festival, this immersive installation extends sculptural form into a dynamic environment where material construction, atmosphere, and spatial perception unfold together.




SCULPTURE | FRACTAL DROID

Presented with the support of ARC Festival, Fractal Droid is a large-scale interactive sculptural installation that premiered as a fourth stage. Surrounded by a Void Acoustics sound system, it served as both a performance space and a photo-op for festivalgoers and dancers, bringing together sculpture, sound, and participation within the festival environment. The inside will later be expanded upon to accommodate live artists to perform inside the sculpture.

CRYPTALOGIK | Digital fabrication with Aaron Lobdell

STRUCTURAL STUDIES

Working with digital production specialist Aaron Lobdell, CRYPTALOGIK developed the structural planning behind Fractal Droid through digital studies focused on scale, weight, and build feasibility. This phase helped establish the underlying framework of the sculpture, creating a bridge between the initial concept and its full-scale fabrication in steel.

CRYPTALOGIK | Fabrication and welding with Mark Trace

DIGITAL TO STEEL

Working closely with fabricator and welder Mark Trace, CRYPTALOGIK brought the digital design of Fractal Droid into steel through a highly organized fabrication process. Using CAD models as on-site reference, marked cuts, CNC-routed jigs, and precise welding angles guided the sculpture upward layer by layer through its frame and face. Steel components were organized into horizontal sections to support the build sequence, while the droid itself was ultimately separated into multiple pieces for transport. To make this possible, a custom coupling system was developed so the upper head section could slide down onto bolted connection points and be fastened securely into place. Weighing over 2,000 pounds, the installation also required structural concrete blocks positioned behind the sculpture to ensure secure anchoring on site.
